‘Then do ye believe in the Devil?’ he asked.
‘Ye ken that they’ve a name for being queer. The man never comes here forbye once or twice a-year, and he has few dealings wi’ other herds. He’s got an ill name, too, for losing sheep. I dinna like the country ava. Up by yon Muneraw — no that I’ve ever been there, but I’ve seen it afar off — is enough to put a man daft for the rest o’ his days. What’s taking ye thereaways? It’s no the time for the fishing?’
Under the Land Act of 1887, the tenants received the following still greater and always one-sided privileges, (i) By this Act leases are allowed to be broken by the tenant, but not by the landlord. All leaseholders whose leases would expire within ninety-nine years after the passing of the Act have the option of going into court and getting their contracts broken and a judicial rent fixed. No equivalent power is given to the landlords. (Land Act of 1887, secs, 1 and 2.) (2) The Act varies rent already judicially fixed for fifteen years by the Land Courts in the years 1881, 1882, 1883, 1884, and 1885. (Sec. 29.) (3) It stays evictions, and allows rent to be paid by instalments. In the case of tenants whose valuation does not exceed ￡50, the court before which proceedings are being taken for the recovery of any debt due by the tenant is empowered to stay his eviction, and may give him liberty to pay his creditors by instalments, and can extend the time for such payment as it thinks proper. (Land Act of 1887, sec. 30.)
“Where can they be sent?” said Vasili, disapprovingly and ironically as it seem to Eugene.
“My God, my God! What am I to do? Can it be that I shall perish like this?” said he to himself. Is it not possible to do anything? Yet something must be done. Do not think about her” - he ordered himself. “Do not think!” and immediately he began thinking and seeing her before him, and seeing also the shade of the plane-tree.
[kjv] The burden of the word of the LORD for Israel, saith the LORD, which stretcheth forth the heavens, and layeth the foundation of the earth, and formeth the spirit of man within him. [bbe] The word of the Lord about Israel. The Lord by whom the heavens are stretched out and the bases of the earth put in place, and the spirit of man formed inside him, has said: 12:2 [hgb] 我 必 使 耶 路 撒 冷 被 围 困 的 时 候 ， 向 四 围 列 国 的 民 成 为 令 人 昏 醉 的 杯 ， 这 默 示 也 论 到 犹 大 （ 或 作 犹 大 也 是 如 此 ） 。 [kjv] Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of trembling unto all the people round about, when they shall be in the siege both against Judah and against Jerusalem. [bbe] See, I will make Jerusalem a cup of shaking fear to all the peoples round about, when Jerusalem is shut in. 12:3 [hgb] 那 日 ， 我 必 使 耶 路 撒 冷 向 聚 集 攻 击 他 的 万 民 ， 当 作 一 块 重 石 头 。 [kjv] And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it. [bbe] And it will come about in that day that I will make Jerusalem a stone of great weight for all the peoples; all those who take it up will be badly wounded; and all the nations of the earth will come together against it. 12:4 [hgb] 耶 和 华 说 ， 到 那 日 ， 我 必 使 一 切 马 匹 惊 惶 ， 使 骑 马 的 颠 狂 。 [kjv] In that day, saith the LORD, I will smite every horse with astonishment, and his rider with madness: and I will open mine eyes upon the house of Judah, and will smite every horse of the people with blindness. [bbe] In that day, says the Lord, I will put fear into every horse and make every horseman go off his head: and my eyes will be open on the people of Judah, and I will make every horse of the peoples blind. [kjv] And the governors of Judah shall say in their heart, The inhabitants of Jerusalem shall be my strength in the LORD of hosts their God. [bbe] And the families of Judah will say in their hearts, The people of Jerusalem have their strength in the Lord of armies, their God. 12:6 [hgb] 那 日 ， 我 必 使 犹 大 的 族 长 ， 如 火 盆 在 木 柴 中 ， 又 如 火 把 在 禾 捆 里 。 [kjv] In that day will I make the governors of Judah like an hearth of fire among the wood, and like a torch of fire in a sheaf; and they shall devour all the people round about, on the right hand and on the left: and Jerusalem shall be inhabited again in her own place, even in Jerusalem. [bbe] In that day I will make the families of Judah like a pot with fire in it among trees, and like a flaming stick among cut grain; they will send destruction on all the peoples round about, on the right hand and on the left: and Jerusalem will be living again in the place which is hers, that is, in Jerusalem. [kjv] The LORD also shall save the tents of Judah first, that the glory of the house of David and the glory of the inhabitants of Jerusalem do not magnify themselves against Judah. [bbe] And the Lord will give salvation to the tents of Judah first, so that the glory of the family of David and the glory of the people of Jerusalem may not be greater than that of Judah. [kjv] In that day shall the LORD defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and he that is feeble among them at that day shall be as David; and the house of David shall be as God, as the angel of the LORD before them. [bbe] In that day the Lord will be a cover over the people of Jerusalem; and he who is feeble among them in that day will be as strong as David, and the family of David will be as God, as the angel of the Lord before them. [kjv] And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem. [bbe] And it will come about on that day that I will take in hand the destruction of all the nations who come against Jerusalem. [kjv] And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn. [bbe] And I will send down on the family of David and on the people of Jerusalem the spirit of grace and of prayer; and their eyes will be turned to the one who was wounded by their hands: and they will be weeping for him as for an only son, and their grief for him will be bitter, like the grief of one sorrowing for his oldest son. [kjv] In that day shall there be a great mourning in Jerusalem, as the mourning of Hadadrimmon in the valley of Megiddon. [bbe] In that day there will be a great weeping in Jerusalem, like the weeping of Hadad-rimmon in the valley of Megiddon. [kjv] And the land shall mourn, every family apart; the family of the house of David apart, and their wives apart; the family of the house of Nathan apart, and their wives apart; [bbe] And the land will give itself to weeping, every family separately; the family of David by themselves, and their wives by themselves; the family of Nathan by themselves, and their wives by themselves; 12:13 [hgb] 利 未 家 ， 男 的 独 在 一 处 ， 女 的 独 在 一 处 。 [kjv] The family of the house of Levi apart, and their wives apart; the family of Shimei apart, and their wives apart; [bbe] The family of Levi by themselves, and their wives by themselves; the family of Shimei by themselves, and their wives by themselves; 12:14 [hgb] 其 余 的 各 家 ， 男 的 独 在 一 处 ， 女 的 独 在 一 处 。 [kjv] All the families that remain, every family apart, and their wives apart. [bbe] And all the other families by themselves, and their wives by themselves.
[kjv] Moreover, brethren, we do you to wit of the grace of God bestowed on the churches of Macedonia; [bbe] And now we give you news, brothers, about the grace of God which has been given to the churches of Macedonia;8:2 [hgb] 就 是 他 们 在 患 难 中 受 大 试 炼 的 时 候 ， 仍 有 满 足 的 快 乐 ， 在 极 穷 之 间 ， 还 格 外 显 出 他 们 乐 捐 的 厚 恩 。 [kjv] How that in a great trial of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded unto the riches of their liberality. [bbe] How while they were undergoing every sort of trouble, and were in the greatest need, they took all the greater joy in being able to give freely to the needs of others.8:3 [hgb] 我 可 以 证 明 他 们 是 按 着 力 量 ， 而 且 也 过 了 力 量 ， 自 己 甘 心 乐 意 的 捐 助 。 [kjv] For to their power, I bear record, yea, and beyond their power they were willing of themselves; [bbe] For I give them witness, that as they were able, and even more than they were able, they gave from the impulse of their hearts,8:4 [hgb] 再 三 地 求 我 们 ， 准 他 们 在 这 供 给 圣 徒 的 恩 情 上 有 分 。 [kjv] Praying us with much intreaty that we would receive the gift, and take upon us the fellowship of the ministering to the saints. [bbe] Seriously requesting us that they might have a part in this grace of being servants to the needs of the saints:8:5 [hgb] 并 且 他 们 所 作 的 ， 不 但 照 我 们 所 想 望 的 ， 更 照 神 的 旨 意 ， 先 把 自 己 献 给 主 ， 又 归 附 了 我 们 。 [kjv] And this they did, not as we hoped, but first gave their own selves to the Lord, and unto us by the will of God. [bbe] And going even farther than our hope, they first gave themselves to the Lord and to us after the purpose of God.8:6 [hgb] 因 此 我 劝 提 多 ， 既 然 在 你 们 中 间 开 办 这 慈 惠 的 事 ， 就 当 办 成 了 。 [kjv] Insomuch that we desired Titus, that as he had begun, so he would also finish in you the same grace also. [bbe] So that we made a request to Titus that, as he had made a start before, so he might make this grace complete in you.8:7 [hgb] 你 们 既 然 在 信 心 ， 口 才 ， 知 识 ， 热 心 ， 和 待 我 们 的 爱 心 上 ， 都 格 外 显 出 满 足 来 ， 就 当 在 这 慈 惠 的 事 上 ， 也 格 外 显 出 满 足 来 。 [kjv] Therefore, as ye abound in every thing, in faith, and utterance, and knowledge, and in all diligence, and in your love to us, see that ye abound in this grace also. [bbe] And that as you are full of every good thing, of faith, of the word, of knowledge, of a ready mind, and of love to us, so you may be full of this grace in the same way.8:8 [hgb] 我 说 这 话 ， 不 是 吩 咐 你 们 ， 乃 是 借 着 别 人 的 热 心 ， 试 验 你 们 爱 心 的 实 在 。 [kjv] I speak not by commandment, but by occasion of the forwardness of others, and to prove the sincerity of your love. [bbe] I am not giving you an order, but using the ready mind of others as a test of the quality of your love.8:9 [hgb] 你 们 知 道 我 们 主 耶 稣 基 督 的 恩 典 。 [kjv] For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich. [bbe] For you see the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, how though he had wealth, he became poor on your account, so that through his need you might have wealth.8:10 [hgb] 我 在 这 事 上 把 我 的 意 见 告 诉 你 们 ， 是 与 你 们 有 益 。 [kjv] And herein I give my advice: for this is expedient for you, who have begun before, not only to do, but also to be forward a year ago. [bbe] And in this I give my opinion: for it is to your profit, who were the first to make a start a year before, not only to do this, but to make clear that your minds were more than ready to do it.8:11 [hgb] 如 今 就 当 办 成 这 事 。 [kjv] Now therefore perform the doing of it; that as there was a readiness to will, so there may be a performance also out of that which ye have. [bbe] Then make the doing of it complete; so that as you had a ready mind, you may give effect to it as you are able.8:12 [hgb] 因 为 人 若 有 愿 作 的 心 ， 必 蒙 悦 纳 ， 乃 是 照 他 所 有 的 ， 并 不 是 照 他 所 无 的 。 [kjv] For if there be first a willing mind, it is accepted according to that a man hath, and not according to that he hath not. [bbe] For if there is a ready mind, a man will have God's approval in the measure of what he has, and not of what he has not.8:13 [hgb] 我 原 不 是 要 别 人 轻 省 ， 你 们 受 累 ， [kjv] For I mean not that other men be eased, and ye burdened: [bbe] And I am not saying this so that others may get off free, while the weight comes on you:8:14 [hgb] 乃 要 均 平 。 [kjv] But by an equality, that now at this time your abundance may be a supply for their want, that their abundance also may be a supply for your want: that there may be equality: [bbe] But so that things may be equal; that from those things of which you have more than enough at the present time their need may be helped, and that if you are in any need they may be a help to you in the same way, making things equal.8:15 [hgb] 如 经 上 所 记 ， 多 收 的 也 没 有 余 ， 少 收 的 也 没 有 缺 。 [kjv] As it is written, He that had gathered much had nothing over; and he that had gathered little had no lack. [bbe] As it says in the Writings, He who had taken up much had nothing over and he who had little had enough.8:16 [hgb] 多 谢 神 ， 感 动 提 多 的 心 ， 叫 他 待 你 们 殷 勤 ， 像 我 一 样 。 [kjv] But thanks be to God, which put the same earnest care into the heart of Titus for you. [bbe] But praise be to God, who puts the same care for you into the heart of Titus.8:17 [hgb] 他 固 然 是 听 了 我 的 劝 。 [kjv] For indeed he accepted the exhortation; but being more forward, of his own accord he went unto you. [bbe] For while he gladly gave ear to our request, he was interested enough to go to you from the impulse of his heart.8:18 [hgb] 我 们 还 打 发 一 位 兄 弟 和 他 同 去 。 [kjv] And we have sent with him the brother, whose praise is in the gospel throughout all the churches; [bbe] And with him we have sent a brother whose praise in the good news has gone through all the churches;8:19 [hgb] 不 但 这 样 ， 他 也 被 众 教 会 挑 选 ， 和 我 们 同 行 ， 把 所 托 与 我 们 的 这 捐 赀 送 到 了 ， 可 以 荣 耀 主 ， 又 表 明 我 们 乐 意 的 心 。 [kjv] And not that only, but who was also chosen of the churches to travel with us with this grace, which is administered by us to the glory of the same Lord, and declaration of your ready mind: [bbe] And not only so, but he was marked out by the churches to go with us in the grace of this giving which we have undertaken to the glory of the Lord and to make clear that our mind was ready:8:20 [hgb] 这 就 免 得 有 人 因 我 们 收 的 捐 银 很 多 ， 就 挑 我 们 的 不 是 。 [kjv] Avoiding this, that no man should blame us in this abundance which is administered by us: [bbe] And so that no man might be able to say anything against us in the business of this giving which has been put into our hands:8:21 [hgb] 我 们 留 心 行 光 明 的 事 ， 不 但 在 主 面 前 ， 就 在 人 面 前 ， 也 是 这 样 。 [kjv] Providing for honest things, not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of men. [bbe] For the business has been so ordered by us as to have the approval, not only of the Lord, but of men.8:22 [hgb] 我 们 又 打 发 一 位 兄 弟 同 去 。 [kjv] And we have sent with them our brother, whom we have oftentimes proved diligent in many things, but now much more diligent, upon the great confidence which I have in you. [bbe] And we have sent with them our brother, whose ready spirit has been made clear to us at times and in ways without number, but it is now all the more so because of the certain faith which he has in you.8:23 [hgb] 论 到 提 多 ， 他 是 我 的 同 伴 ， 一 同 为 你 们 劳 碌 的 。 [kjv] Whether any do enquire of Titus, he is my partner and fellowhelper concerning you: or our brethren be enquired of, they are the messengers of the churches, and the glory of Christ. [bbe] If any question comes up about Titus, he is my brother-worker, working with me for you; or about the others, they are the representatives of the churches to the glory of Christ.8:24 [hgb] 所 以 你 们 务 要 在 众 教 会 面 前 ， 显 明 你 们 爱 心 的 凭 据 ， 并 我 所 夸 奖 你 们 的 凭 据 。 [kjv] Wherefore shew ye to them, and before the churches, the proof of your love, and of our boasting on your behalf. [bbe] Make clear then to them, as representatives of the churches, the quality of your love, and that the things which we have said about you are true.
We marines were now drawn up here under arms. The chace-party were drawn up separate. The men of the Columbus were drawn up separate. The officers stepped out into the midst of the three parties, and spoke so as all might hear. Captain Carton was the officer in command, and he had a spy-glass in his hand. His coxswain stood by him with another spy-glass, and with a slate on which he seemed to have been taking down signals.
